Erik dreams of conquering the world. Of getting a piece of the promised Land Beyond. He and his generation were too young to play a role in the resistance movement, but as farmers, they must now save Denmark in the modern times that await after World War II. Erik marries Lisbet and buys a small farm with fertile land. Through drought, tragedy, ups and downs, Erik and Lisbet become firsthand witnesses to the disappearance of the only culture and way of life they truly know. From being heroes, they become villains.

Over half a century, Erik confides in three comrades in a travel book they established when they met at Rødding folk high school at the age of 19. Several years after Erik's death, his son Svend finds the book. Today, he is divorced, lives in Copenhagen, is a member of parliament, and is being pursued by Ekstra Bladet, who has sniffed out a story that could ruin his political career. With the book in hand, the journey back to his hometown becomes a painful encounter with a life and culture he turned his back on. At the same time, the travel book holds secrets that ultimately prove crucial to himself.
