Intermezzo

Apart from being brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is in his thirties and a lawyer in Dublin - apparently successful and competent. But in the wake of their father's death, he medicates himself to sleep and struggles to manage his relationships with two very different women - the love of his life, Sylvia, and Naomi, a university student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his polished older brother. In the midst of his grief, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman with a turbulent past of her own, and their lives quickly and intensely become intertwined. For the two grieving brothers and the people around them, a new interlude begins - a period of desire and despair, but also a chance to discover how much a life can hold without breaking.
